River North Walkway / Bikeway

Ken Herceg & Associates, Inc. designed a 1 mile walkway/bikeway along the St. Joseph River. The 10-foot wide concrete bikeway connects the East Race downtown area to a proposed path near Indiana University South Bend.

A cast-in-place concrete structure with sheet pile retaining walls carries the structure under the busy Sample Street Bridge. Areas of river bank erosion were stabilized using erosion control blankets, fiber rolls and geogrids. Additional features include new bikeway lighting, complete replacement of the existing street lighting, two park areas and a fishing platform.

Permits were obtained from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for the work in and along the St. Joseph River. The project was funded by an 80% ISTEA grant with the remaining 20% funded by the City of South Bend. Also, the project was designed and bid according to INDOT standards.

Project Location: South Bend, Indiana
Total Project Cost: $1,100,000
